Importance Of Belonging In Teenagers - 724 Words
When you were a teen did you feel like nobody knew who you were? Did you feel like you didnââ¬â¢t belong? Most people think they know what teens need because they were one at one point, but most people donââ¬â¢t realize that belonging is the most important part of a teenââ¬â¢s life. Teenââ¬â¢s need a sense of belonging in their friend groups, in their family, and in themselves. First, teens need to keep themselves safe from peer pressure. In the first article I read it states that teens who belong to a group of people that they like tend to veer away from negative peer pressure. ââ¬Å"Teens who belong to a positive group -- and share a sense of belonging with group members -- are often better able to resist negative peer pressure from outside sources thanâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦We also see this in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton when Ponyboy runs away. ââ¬Å"Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door...It was plain to me that Darry didnt want me around. And I wouldnt stay if he did.â⬠(The Outsiders, 44). This relates to my claim, because later on in the story Ponyboy had ended up in huge trouble. Johnny had killed one of the socs, and then they were running away from the police, this wouldnââ¬â¢t have happened if Ponyboy felt that the slap was really an accident. These are some examples why teens n eed a strong family bond. Lastly, teens need a sense of belonging in themselves. Teens need to have high levels of self-confidence, most teens lack self-confidence and they need it back. ââ¬Å"Listening, empathizing, and always begin ready to listen will help reaffirm your teens sense of belonging while building her self-confidence.â⬠(The Importance of Belonging in Teenagers, 3). Talking to your teen and interacting with them will boost their self-confidence. I also see this in another article where it talks about how interaction can boost their self-esteem. ââ¬Å"Last but not least, a teen who experiences the benefits of belonging to a group is capable of choosing other positive groups that are fun, have experiences in which they can learn worthwhile life lessons and are good for their self-esteem.â⬠(5 Reasons Teens Need Sense of Belonging, 2).
